What Are The Skills Leaders Use?
Building the winning team requires more than just hiring a bunch of talented people. It means:
- developing a team of people who will work well together
- having a shared vision and commitment
- allowing open discussion
- encouraging positive, informal interactions between group members
- instilling a ‘winning’ attitude throughout the organisation
- watching for and quickly trying to reverse team-building problems such as jealousy, cynicism, and defensive behaviour
To build the winning team you need to communicate and show people what direction the company is headed in. You also need to get ‘buy in’ to this ‘direction’. You can't expect people to support a group if they don't agree with where it's headed or, worse, they don't know where it is headed.
So The Question Begs - Is Leadership a Skill You Can Learn?
Some leaders are gifted with strong empathy and communication skills that does give them a head start. But there are also key leadership skills and knowledge that even the best leaders need to learn.
And all leadership skills can be learnt (and re-learnt). Some people are luck and intuitively notice and learn based on seeing how people around them interact.
Most of us however need a little help. That's where a leadership course comes in. A course can point out to us what is going on by breaking it down into smaller interactions that we can see and understand.
We can also learn small but important things we can do on a daily basis. These can improve our relationships with staff, help us communicate better, give us the confidence to raise issues the right way. An important leadership skill that is easily learnt is how to give staff feedback - both good and bad.
Funny enough, by working on "small" leadership skills that we can use each day, our leadership confidence grows, and the respect we gain from our staff builds. As time goes by, this translates into being seen as a "natural leader" because those around you are confident in your skills and judgement and are happy to be lead by you.
