Course Reviews

Don't just take our word for it

  • “ I would personally highly recommend the Australian College. The course material was appropriate for the courses that I participated in and I learnt a great deal. The course material was also set out in the manner that you could really understand it. When I struggled in any areas of the course, the college was only a phone call away, and the trainers were so very helpful and friendly. The feedback you received from the markings, really helped encourage me to continue my study and boosted my confidence in the knowledge I had on the course. It REALLY felt good that I had done such great work. Thank you for this. Being out of school for quite some time now (!!!) it makes you doubt yourself and wonder if you have the knowledge to start studying again, so this encouragement was really greatly received. ” Renae B

Planning Your Career in Accounting

If you have come to this page you must have some interest in accounting….

Why are you interested in Accountancy?

That’s great that you have an interest in accountancy – as many people think of accounting as a boring job that just involves working with numbers. Wrong! Well you do work with numbers; but it’s not boring!

That doesn’t mean that accountancy is always a barrel of laughs. It is quite a respected and serious profession. And it needs people who are detail oriented and who like solving problems.

It also has a creative aspect which is why many famous entertainers started with their back-up job being accountancy. That’s right – Mick Jagger was going to be an accountant before fame hit.

Accounting roles also have many forms. While the mobster Al Capone was never able to be charged for his criminal activities, he was eventually jailed for tax invasion based on lots of work by FBI investigative accountants.

Given you are here reading this you already know that accounting offers great job security (when times are tough businesses need an accountant / when times are good they need an accountant..); it pays well (over 30% higher than average earnings according JobOutlook.gov.au); and there are lots of variety available in different job roles (work for the government or a private institution;  work at a large company or run your own small firm; manage a company’s expenses or solely do taxes…).

You would also know that there is strong demand for accountants and high job growth forecasts for the future.

So what’s holding you back from starting a career in accounting?

What Else Do You Need to Know About Accounting Studies

Most accountancy roles require a formal qualification. The decision is which one is right for you.

The main career starting point is Certificate IV in Accounting. This is the foundation qualification that progresses your skills from accounts clerical to “proper” accounting.

By comparison, in first year University you learn debits and credits, journals and ledgers and double entry accounting.

You also learn this in a Certificate IV in Accounting*. As well, you get hands on with computerised accounting. This is an important skill given that most workplaces use some form of accounting software.  In Certificate IV you will also get to the stage of preparing standard profit and loss statements and balance sheets.

* and can use this qualification as the basis for University entry if that’s you ultimate goal.

So for choice of qualification, Certificate IV in Accounting is the best option to get job ready accounting skills.

You will also learn if it’s a tax deduction when Little Bo Peep loses her sheep? And that Santa’s accountant values his sleigh using Net Present Value.

All (bad) jokes aside, there is no real reason stopping you taking the important step of enrolling in Certificate IV in Accounting.
